Waste-to-energy gives a new life for rubbish

How does this sound: using domestic, otherwise unusable mixed waste instead of buying fossil fuels from abroad? It sounds pretty good in our opinion. Vantaa Energy’s waste-to-energy plant is a modern way of producing energy, where everyone is a winner. As a result, we can offer you affordable energy and our shared environment stays cleaner.

Waste-to-energy plant in a nutshell

Our waste-to-energy plant in East Vantaa is among the best in the world. Each year, it burns 374 000 tonnes of unusable waste supplied by HSY in the Helsinki region and Rosk’n Roll Oy in the Uusimaa province. Otherwise, all of that waste would end up in the landfill. The amount of waste used by the waste-to-energy plant meets about half of the district heat needed by the entire city of Vantaa in a year. In addition, the plant also covers about 30% of the annual electricity demand of Vantaa. Thanks to the waste-to-energy plant, we use 40 per cent less fossil fuels, and our carbon dioxide emissions in Vantaa are reduced by about 20 per cent.

The waste is combusted with grate firing technology, which is a reliable and the most widely used waste combustion technology in the world. We also use natural gas as fuel, which increases the plant’s energy efficiency.

A leap towards smarter energy choices

In order to have a better tomorrow, we all need to make a contribution. Thanks to the waste-to-energy plant, we are less dependent on imported fossil raw materials and the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in Vantaa is falling. The plant makes a mockery of emission limits: emissions fall below the limit values by an average of 50 per cent. Ninety per cent of gas particulates from the chimney are filtered, and the plant stops if the gas levels exceed the permitted emission values. We have the world’s best technology, which means that the plant is as eco-friendly as possible.
