Creating smart energy services and systems

Vantaa Energy sees smart energy systems and services as key enablers of decarbonisation. Improved use of data can make systems cleaner and more efficient. Price incentives and transparency paired with smart systems help consumers and producers optimize their energy use and production, respectively. This will improve energy efficiency and flexibility and enable the effective use of low-carbon energy and storage. Increasingly real-time metering of e.g. energy consumption, temperature and humidity will serve as a basis for better smart services.

Customers benefit from more accurate data in multiple ways. Smart systems can automatically shift energy use to when it is optimal, improving energy efficiency and lowering their energy bills. Smart services, such as advanced reporting, can also help customers take action to further improve energy efficiency. On the other hand, utility companies can optimise their transmission of energy and production based on consumption data to produce the needed energy using the most cost-effective and climate-friendly sources of energy.

In our production, digitalisation enables emission reductions for example at our biopower plant, commissioned in 2019. The emission reductions generated by the plant will increase even more with an intelligent control system that increases production capacity at the plant. This is an example of digitalization and artificial intelligence allowing for significant benefits in traditional power generation without large investments.

We want to be part of harnessing the potential that digitalisation and data have for reducing emissions and fighting climate change, while giving the customers a central role.
