Targets and goals of corporate social responsibility 2016

The goals of the corporate social responsibility of the Vantaa Energy Group and the related targets were drawn up by the corporate social responsibility working group in 2010. After that, they were subjected to a round of comments in various functions. The Group management discussed them in their meeting in August 2010.

In the management review in spring 2011, the goals and targets will be approved as part of the ISO 14011 environmental management system:

Climate change mitigation

  • The waste-to-energy plant project was successfully approved on schedule; the plant will be completed in 2014. With the waste-to-energy plant, Vantaa Energy’s carbon dioxide emissions in Vantaa will be reduced by about 20 % from the current level. The volume of landfill waste and, consequently, the amount of landfill gas emissions will also be reduced.
  • Share of renewable energy 20 % of energy generation.
  • Share of renewable energy and other energy outside the emissions trading scheme 40 % of energy generation.
  • Investigating the possibilities of using biofuels in own energy generation by the end of 2013.
  • Sufficient supply of ‘green’ products to meet customer demand

Promoting energy efficiency

  • Energy production in Vantaa is based on efficient co-generation.
  • We will improve the efficiency of our energy use by 5%.
  • We undertake to support our customers' energy efficiency measures to achieve a 9% energy saving compared with development without the saving measures.
  • We will offer hourly-metered consumption data to our customers by the end of 2012.

Reducing local environmental impacts

  • Improvement of ash recycling is investigated.
  • Along with the waste-to-energy power plant, source-separated mixed waste ending up in the landfill will be reduced by 320,000 t/a.
  • We are investigating new technical alternatives to meet the constantly tightening regulations on flue gas emissions by the end of 2013
  • Electric and hybrid vehicles account for 30% of the fleet of passenger cars used by the Group.
  • Promotion of remote work.

A company that develops its accountability

  • We take the aspect of responsibility into account in our strategy process, as well as in governance and decision-making processes. Vantaa Energy’s corporate responsibility policy is updated every year.
  • We publish an annual corporate social responsibility report in accordance with the GRI guidelines, telling openly about reaching our responsibility targets and new goals.
  • Our safety target is zero occupational accidents.
  • We will specify the rules of social responsibility in fuel procurement in 2012.
  • We will improve corporate safety by developing safety management procedures and guidelines.
  • In our operations, we comply with the early intervention model.
  • We recognise our responsibility for youth employment and spreading information about the energy sector (summer jobs and traineeships, collaboration with colleges).
